DISTINGUISHING MARKS OR SIGNATURE: Chest made by Caswell – Runyan Co. Huntington-Ind. Factory located in Huntington that was manufacturing cedar chests as a commercial article since 1907. DATE PERIOD: early to middle 1900’s approximately about 1928.
SIZE & DIMENSIONS: 46” (long), 26” (tall), 22” (deep).
WEIGHT: 75-100 pounds.
CONDITION: good-excellent
HISTORY: Cedar chest owned by Bill Neal’s mother. Today it belongs to Brenda & Bill Neal from Houston, TX. This furniture was covered by a strong and black varnish or wood dye that hid the original wood and metal. Also the four legs were weak or lost in some parts. According to the parameters of the art restoration-conservation, has been cleaned the wood and metal, fixed the broken pieces, and smoothed out to match the rest of the chest. Treatment: Clean wood and metal (several techniques) Fixing and gluing the broken pieces Formal reintegration (epoxy materials) Chromatic reintegration (Repainting / Retouching) Final protection.
